The Coast to Coast challenge is a very popular challenge event and really is the adventure of a lifetime. It covers three National Parks: Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, taking in some of the finest scenery England has to offer. The route roughly follows Alfred Wainwright’s route, which goes from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay and is approximately 192 miles long. It is often thought good luck to collect a pebble from the Irish Sea and carry it to the North Sea.
What is the route?
In line with tradition, the walk starts on the beaches of St Bees where walkers like to pick up a pebble to leave in the North sea at the end of the walk. The walk initially crosses the stunning terrain of the Lake District; you will pass through the tranquil valleys of Borrowdale, Grasmere and Patterdale. Whilst in the Lake District you will see some of the most famous mountains in England, such as Helvellyn. After leaving the rugged scenery of the Lake District behind, the route takes you through gentler landscape towards the Yorkshire Dales. Walking through Swaledale you will see the Dales in all their glory, before passing through the remarkable town of Richmond. Here you will have chance to see the famous Richmond Castle and have a drink in one of its many renowned pubs! After passing through Richmond, Wainwright’s route takes you up onto the sweeping North York Moors. The moorlands eventually lead to the sea at Robin Hood’s Bay; the end of your journey. Here you can enjoy: the scenic cliffs, the stunning beaches and drop that pebble back into the ocean!
