Gorge walking really is an adrenaline fuelled activity. Here in the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District we have the best, and most exciting, gorge walking and gorge scrambling in the North of England. Slip and slide your way up or down the gorge with one of our experienced instructors and enjoy the beautiful limestone walls which guide you through the gorge.
What is Gorge Walking and Ghyll Scrambling?
In a nutshell, gorge walking and ghyll scrambling are the same. A gorge tends to be a steep sided rocky ravine where the water has carved a deep channel into the rock, which are most commonly found in areas where limestone is present, some call a gorge a cave without a roof. A ghyll is a Norsk word we inherited from the Vikings that simply means mountain stream. Ghylls don’t tend to have the steep sided walls like in a gorge.
As always at Alfresco Adventures we put the safety of the participants at the forefront whilst gorge walking/ ghyll scrambling. We provide you with top quality equipment which includes:
A wetsuit
A helmet
A cag (a protective layer helping keep you dry, trap heat and reduce wind chill in order to keep you happier in the water for longer!)
A buoyancy aid (please note in some ghylls it is not suitable to wear a buoyancy aid)
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
• Footwear. Trainers or walking boots (NO wellingtons)
• Swim wear. To go under the wetsuit
• Towel
• Personal Medication. Any prescription medicines you need such as inhaler
Our Gorge Walking/ Ghyll Scrambling sessions are approximately 3 hours long and can be either morning or afternoon and are suitable for the age of 10 years upwards. The Epic Esk Ghyll is up to 6 hours and the minimum age for this is 16 years.
